Carney's Speech and Trump's Letter
Mark Carney rallies the faithful at Davos to sell out Canada.
In this year’s meeting of the global elite in Davos, Switzerland, the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney received a standing ovation. He is only the third man to have received such a distinction from such a somber audience (the other two were Nelson Mandela and Volodymyr Zelenskyy). His speech would have won a freshman composition award at Harvard or Oxford, and Carney had studied at both.
Carney invoked two allusions. The first was to Thucydides, whose The Peloponnesian War illustrated how the Athenian empire cannibalized its allies. Carney implored the world to stand together against such mafia imperialism. “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu” were his memorable choice of words.
